Subject: Re: Recommended gear ratios for Meade DS 492 in AutoStar 497 Sent: Tuesday, February 3, 2009 21:10:22 From: richard seymour (firstname.lastname@example.org) It bubbles down to: "When using DS motors, multiply the number of teeth in the worm wheel for each axis by 0.0228148." So if the EQ mount has a 100 tooth gear, the ratio would be 2.28148 (or -2.28148 if the direction of rotation needs to be reversed) have fun --dick Keith Woodard wrote: > I am using the Meade 492 DS in support of my GOTO retrofit project for an > Orion SkyView Deluxe EQ. > > Thanks, > Keith
From: Keith Woodard (email@example.com) Which gear do I need to count the teeth in question, the worm wheel or worm shaft gear? Also, is there any documentation about these gears for provides a precise number of teeth? Thanks, Keith

Probably the "worm wheel" in your nomenclature. But you should also check that any extra gears (in an unfamiliar mount) such as a final pair of "Transfer gears" leading to the worm shaft, don't add in an unequal number of teeth. > Also, is there any documentation about these gears for provides > a precise number of teeth? Years of accumulated postings in the Roboscope group cover that topic for dozens, if not hundreds, of mounts. My own method is to mark a tooth, and then count them... at least three times (if two of the counts agree, i feel lucky). have fun --dick
Subject: Recommended gear ratios for Meade DS 492 in AutoStar 497 Sent: Tuesday, February 3, 2009 18:56:50 From: Keith Woodard (firstname.lastname@example.org) Within the telescope mount menu, what mount configuration is best to emulate a Meade DS 492? Best Regards, Keith Proud USAF Veteran of Operation Desert StormMike here: I'll let our resident AutoStar Expert, Dick Seymour, handle that question.
From: richard seymour (email@example.com) Hi... I'm not sure i understand what you mean by "emulate" a 492. The 492 motor kit was used to drive the DS-60, DS-70, DS-80, DS-114 and DS-127. They are all Alt/Az scopes. If you're trying to use the DS motor units on another telescope, you need to count the number of teeth on the final driven gear (the one enmeshed with the worm). Then apply the formula from the "GearRatioGospel" file in the Files area of the Roboscope Yahoo group. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/RoboScope/files/GearRatioGospel-updated have fun --dick
