I had heard some time ago that Meade may be in some trouble because of
the slow economy and Bankruptcy could be an option.

I hope that this is incorrect info.

The introduction of the LS telescope could be a great shot in the arm.

How does Meade stand when compared to their rival Celestron??

I have several Meade 'scopes and hope that they will be around for years
to come.

There is a article in "Sky and Telescope" for March 2009 that mentions
the Meade ETX LS telescope and also says that it will have a future
review when it is released for sale. Personally I think that with all
the features it has the price is not too far off the mark.
