Subject: re n4,etx105 Sent: Monday, August 11, 2003 23:42:13 From: nh64man@webtv.net i own the nexstar4 and a etx90. in my opinion te n4 is a much better all around scope. the nexstar hc is much more user friendly. the n4 is mostly metal very little plastic. etx mostly plastic. i looked through a 105uhtc andmy n4 and image quality was the same. if you want more info on the nexstar4 check out the nexstar4 groupon yahoo. and mike is it fair to continue to point people to that outdated review. the n5 has been updated big time since then and the nexstar hc can now also be updated via the internet. then5i is much quieter in tracking and more acurate than the etxes seem to be. and remember the one you tested was torn apart by meade. oh well that is just my 2 cents worth. oh and mike i do lke the thing you did in showing what mars looks like through different size scopes, good idea. have a nice day darylMike here: There is always a danger of keeping old stuff available but that doesn't necessarily invalidate the information. Yes, certainly much about the NexStar has been updated; same for the ETX and Autostar. Unfortunately, neither Meade nor Celestron has supplied me with a newer NexStar for evaluation. I don't recall that the one Meade supplied "was torn apart" by Meade but I did offer Celestron the opportunity at the time to provide one but they never responded.
Subject: Nextstar 4 vs Meade 105 mm Sent: Saturday, August 9, 2003 03:08:58 From: manand67@hotmail.com (Mohit ANAND) The price of N4 & etx 105mm varies quite a lot 419 for n4 & 695 for etx 105mm , both witout Tripod. I have heard Meade uses more of plastic & there are regular complaints on Gear problem compared to N4. Please can you advice on above lines & comment upon the performance of both. Thanks a lot MohitMike here: I have no experience with that Celestron model. The ETX-105AT now comes with the #497 Autostar and #884 tripod. Yes, there is plastic (in both telescopes); each manufacturer made design decisions on capability vs price. I have used a NexStar 5 (several years ago) and found it somewhat lacking vs the ETX-125/Autostar in both optical performance and GOTO system capabilities. You can read some reviews linked from the top of the current ETX-125 Feedback page. There are also User Observations on my Site.
