meade model 208 for 200.00 is it worth it? 8" model rick
Mike here: I presume this is a used system. I'm not familiar with it. But $200 for an 8" telescope sounds like a deal IF it does what you want and is in good shape, both mechanically and optically.

Ted,

I was very impressed by Mike's posted reply to the email that you
recently sent to him. As the Moderator to a leading discussion forum for
GPS products, I must admit that I have often been far less able to
restrain myself when faced with incoming comments such as yours.

You said:- "Sorry you don't know that much about DS-114 ATE reflector
Telescopes. I just purchased a DS-114 AATE Scope from BJS for 200
dollars with auto star 494. It also came with two Ploss lenses and a 2 x
Barlow all of which are 125 MM and a Meade Electronic Eyepiece 125 MM
also."

I assume that your purchase was based on reasonable, if not extensive,
research - made prior to the purchase, and was not just a 'spur of the
moment' decision. Certainly it would seem that, nowadays, there is
little excuse for computer-aware consumers NOT to take the time and
trouble to research high-technology products BEFORE making purchase
decisions. That said, none-the-less, it would seem that you probably
have got excellent value for money in this purchase. You just don't yet
know what to do with your 'new gadget'.

You then continued:- "I typed in the search engine reviews for the above
scope and I found hardly nothing about this scope listed anywhere. It
seems like this was a promotion scope made just for BJs and Sams clubs."

As I was saying, had you done ANY research PRIOR to making what now
seems to have been a 'hasty' decision, perhaps you would have come to
this conclusion before you felt that you had only purchased a 'promotion
scope' (not actually the case as the DS-114, in the right hands, is a
perfectly adequate astronomical instrument).

You next state:- "Can you tell me anything about this scope. Im afraid
your sight is useless to most of us who have this telescope As it
provides us with no information. Every one who asks you a question about
the DS scopes gets the same old reply. Im sorry I don't know anything
about the scope. This is just great. : ("

In fairness, Mike's (ETX-based) site provides quite a LOT of information
on the non-ETX range of scopes. His section on DS Telescope feedback has
archived communications stretching right back to 1999. I do not think
therefore that you are in ANY WAY entitled to claim that his 'ETX' site
is "useless to most of us". Perhaps it is only "useless" to you - but,
then, is that HIS fault? Mike, personally, may well NOT have anything
constructive to offer by way of feedback regarding the DS model range -
but at least he still posts the queries on the off-chance that OTHER
site visitors may be able to help. After all, I own an ETX-105, an
ETX-125, an LX-90, and my next door neighbour owns an LXD-55. But I
still take the time (as I am sure MANY other visitors do) to read EVERY
contribution to Mike's world-renowned site, just in case I feel I have
something that I CAN contribute.

Your closing paragraph is:- "Why do you even have this site than??? It
is of no use to anyone. Yawhoos site has no information on it either
that I can find. That was a waste of my time. They all talk about the DS
2000 which doesn't help me at all. Oh well, I just thought I would let
you know I was disapointed with your site that clams to be informed
about these scopes. I guess I will keep looking for some information on
it"

Mike provides this site FREE OF CHARGE (take SPECIAL NOTE of that fact)
because he is DEDICATED to the world-wide community of amateur
astronomers, and extraordinarily specially dedicated to the world of
Meade telescopes. "It is of no use to anyone" - well, as I have already
said, you are totally wrong, it is of NO USE to you, because you chose
NOT to research your purchases ahead of walking into BJS. There has been
a phrase in existence for well over 2,000 years, originally coined in
the times of the Roman Empire, and it states (in Latin) 'caveat emptor',
or "beware, the buyer". And if, as you have now discovered, the Yahoo
site also does not furnish information about the DS-114, then perhaps
that should also have been a hint to consider something else as your
entry into this market.

You finally close with:- "Thanks anyway. For nothing. LOL Have a nice
day. May all your stars be bright."

I really would truly like to believe that your email was made
'tongue-in-cheek', as your belated "LOL" might somehow indicate - but
each time I read your comments, all I can see is a 'penny-wise,
pound-foolish' customer, who feels that they have been 'hard done by' as
a result of falling for some 'sales pitch' in a
non-astronomically-related consumer outlet (I have NO experience with
BJS). If you truly feel that you have 'made a mistake' in buying the
DS-114, then get rid of it, and purchase the likes of an ETX-70 or
ETX-90. At least these scopes ARE well-supported by what is undoubtedly
the BEST support site of it's kind anywhere on the Internet. You owe
Mike a sincere apology, and you had better consider making it. It seems
that you are going to need a LOT of help in using WHATEVER computerised
scope you end up purchasing. You are going to find it real difficult
getting your eyes anywhere near the eyepiece of your scope until you
first take out BOTH of your feet from you wide open mouth!

Mike's closing comment does perhaps summarise his feelings very well:-
"I'm always on the lookout for a good DS site to which DS owners can be
referred. Let me know if you start one."

I, too, will wait with baited breath.

Mike here: As you may have noticed, the site is called "Weasner's Mighty ETX Site". "DS" is nowhere in the name. Yes, there is a feedback section for DS (and older Meade models) where you and other DS owners can share information. Of course, a lot of the information on the ETX Site's Autostar Info page is applicable to the #494 (but not all of it however). And many of the accessories and astrophotography pages are just as applicable to the DS telescopes (as well as many other telescopes). Back in 1996 I started the ETX site because there was not much information online about the new (at the time) ETX telescope. I'm always on the lookout for a good DS site to which DS owners can be referred. Let me know if you start one.

A year or two ago, Amazon.com was selling them for about $140 new.
Original list price was about $230, i think (wild guess).
