Love your page!

My DS-114 is sticking badly in the azimuth axis. A little lithium grease
helped, but I think I need to a.disassemble the axis for a thorough
cleaning and lubrication. How do you detach the mount from the tripod to
expose the axel that the azimuth is rotating on?

You have (at least) three options:
(a) you can use a 495 or 497 Autostar on your 4504.
Just select any LXD model (i use the SC 8) and change the "gear ratios" to
Az/RA=4.562963
Alt/DEC=4.562963
The LXD's are German Mounts, like the 4504, so it will engage "meridian
flip", etc.

(a-1) you can update the 495/497 firmware with our "patch kit", choosing
the option which gives the 497 the knowledge of the 4504 as a "known
model".

(b) join the 4504 Yahoo group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Meade4504Telescopes/
... you'll find kindred spirits all over the world

(c) you could open up the controller and (at least) test the 5 volt regulator.
The 4504 controller is mechanically/electronically the same as the 494 Autostar
(but the programming is different).  There's a photo of its insides at:

(d) advertise "wanted" on your local internet sites ... you might get lucky.
(e) ((did i say "three?")) visit local astronomy clubs... someone may
have a 4504 in their closet.

Hi there, hope you can shed some light on my problem. i have a meade
4504 and the handset was working perfectly until tonight when i pulled
the plug out of the wall while it was aligning. now the handset still
has power but the red led display does not load correctly, instead it
just has black squares. hope you can help,
