Subject:	ETX autostar function for DSX

Hello Mike and many thanks for your site..
I've a DSX mount on wich i've installed a celestron C5 and added a LNT
module.

I'm happy with this little & cheap mount that i'm currently tweaking..
will post all job when done if interested.

i just discovered via your website the great job of Dick Seymour with
autostar.

my handbox only shows "AUTOSTAR" above the LCD screen, i assume it's a
#497.

i plan to patch the latest version; Dick indicate that his patch allow
many improve functions but there are some basic (ie factory) one i don't
have:

Setup>telescope>polar mount - i would like to polar mount my scope but
this feature isn't shown in my handbox.

how does the handbox know wich mount i'ts communicating with?

if i tell the handbox the scope is an ETX, would the ETX functions will
turn on ? (then i assume it's a matter of gear ratio to change back to
the original values of DSX)

i want to do astro imaging with my scope, that's why i was thinking
about Polar mounting my scope on a wedge

add on StarGPS, #909 APM for autoguiding with my LPI through a radial
guider and may be 3 star alignment and PEC training etc...

but don't know if Seymour patch will allow all these features to my
DSX...

I'm also a bit worried about alignment procedure as i leave in southern
hemisphere and not skilled enough to find Sigma Octans..any tutorial for
folks who leaves upside down?

Clear skies.
Mike here: The AutoStar #497 has number keys on the keypad; if there are no number keys then it is a #494. There are some alignment tips for Southern Hemisphere users on the Helpful Information: AutoStar Info page. As to questions for Dick, I'll let him respond.

And:

Thank for your fast response.

it've number keys, but i've read somewhere on the web there's also a
#495 version ?!

ok i'll search your website for alignment tips for southern hemisphere.

awaiting Dick comments..
regards.
Mike here: There is (or rather, was) a #495. It came out (briefly) in 1999 and has number keys. A #495 can be upgraded via user-installable software to a #497.

If you install the newest update from Meade, it -will- be a 497,
even if it was a 495 before... but 495s never knew about DSX's,
so i assume it is already a 497 through and through.
(having seen the next note re: numeric keypad)

The Autostar asks the motor cards for a response.
Based upon that response you get a "subset" of the available models
to choose from. The DSX motor cards are how it tells.

Try it. It will have to offer the ETX90, 105 or 125 for this to work
(i don't remember if the ETX70 offers Polar).
If it offers the DS-70, my patch kit replaces that with a 4504 GEM
model, which is -only- Polar.

The kit will add the 909, StarGPS-NX will work on an unpatched
(as well as patched) system. 3 Star only applies to GEM mounts.

There is a MelbMeadeScopes Yahoo group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MelbMeadeScopes/

Lots of "local" experience....

For Alt/Az, you don't need Sigma Octans... just locate "true north"
by any means feasible. Once you've aligned the scope that way,
ask it to -show- you Sigma Octans (SAO 258857 )

have fun

And:

Thanks both of you for your precious advises.

ok, so i'll try this evening (GMT-10) to patch autostar and see if the
handbox offer ETX serie and will advise about that, it should be
interesting..

i assume the same apply with Smartdrive for PEC..

regarding sigma octans: autostar slew to it and ask to center when you
perform a calibration of the sensor of the LNT..

i'll have a look at the link provided to help me finding it accurately.

meantime:

1/ any knowned way to run autostar on a PALM or PDA (I've 2 unused of these lightweight devices)
2/ external power supply: motor cycle battery > does Amperage important? fuse or not?
3/ can't find any Dick Seymour official website ! ?

Clear skies and regards from Tahiti.

What models does it offer now?
(the patching will probably not change the list)

If you can disconnect the LNT, or choose One Star Align, it will not
try to use it.
If you have a way of determining "true" (not magnetic) south,
pointing in that direction when it asks for the Calibrate sensors
will at least get you to within one degree of the true pole.

There is a planetarium program for the PALM which has Autostar-driving
capabilites. Mike's Software Reviews page
http://www.weasner.com/etx/software_reviews.html
lists at least three: StarParty, StarPilot and PocketStarChart

> 2/ external power supply: motor cycle battery > does Amperage
> important? fuse or not?

A 2 amp fuse is advisable. The DSX probably draws about 1 amp as
a high average, so a motorcycle battery will last many hours.
However, a continuous low-drain application like this will greatly
shorten the total service life of a "flooded cell starting battery".
The plates will become covered with a sulphurous coating.
You can overcome that with a specialized charging regimen, but it
does factor in to battery choice.

> 3/ can't find any Dick Seymour official website ! ?

Who has the time?!?! I let Mike and a dozen Yahoo groups serve
for that (i actually -do- maintain an "old RCX patches" repository,
and occasionally place special files where folks can find them).

And:

double check this evening..

found in the telescope model list ETX80 wich allow polar mode and
smartdrive!

great new! so by now DSX & DS2000 users should use polar mode and PEC

Don't forget to set Alt/Az gear ratio back to the original values as
they are not the same.

thanks again.
regards.
