Subject: Part for Meade 229 Telescope Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 16:52:51 From: Scott Cornish (firstname.lastname@example.org) Recently, my daughter was given a telescope that her cousin no longer used. It's an older Meade, model number 229 and is missing the diagonal mirror. I tried Meade but they no longer stock it because it is so old. The CSR there suggests I try other sources on the Internet noting that I should Google the term "0.965 diagonal mirror." Your page came up so I wonder if you could post this. Thanks, Scott CornishMike here: I suggest you try Telescope Warehouse or ScopeStuff (links on the Astronomy Links page on my ETX Site).
Subject: Hand Paddle for Model 4504 Sent: Sunday, May 11, 2008 23:06:07 From: Matthew Dewey (email@example.com) My son bought a Meade Model 4504 Telescope and dropped the Starfinder hand paddle - the display is broken. As a replacement, we have purchased a 494 hand paddle - not a Starfinder. After reading through your sight, (which I wish I had done before) I believe that I cannot upgrade the 494 to a Starfinder. Is this true? To avoid making the same mistake I would like to confirm. If I purchase 497 handset, can I load firmware to make it work with the 4504 Telescope? I assume I will need the 505 cable to do this. True? I have seen some "Starfinder" hand paddles listed on Ebay - would any of those work or do I need something more specific? Thanks for your time - You and your website provide a valuable service to the astronomy community. Matt DeweyMike here: I'll let our resident AutoStar expert, Dick Seymour, answer.
From: richard seymour (firstname.lastname@example.org) >> As a replacement, we have purchased a 494 hand paddle - not a Starfinder. >> After reading through your sight, (which I wish I had done before) I >> believe >> that I cannot upgrade the 494 to a Starfinder. >> >> Is this true? That is correct (for all intents and purposes). You could -open- the two devices, and transfer the display module from the "good" 494 to the Starfinder (if it's truly only the display that's broken). The cases are glued and snap-fitted closed, so it's a bit of an effort to do that. You could verify that the Starfinder is still -working- by (blindly?) operating the scope without the aid of the display. >> >> To avoid making the same mistake I would like to confirm. >> >> If I purchase 497 handset, can I load firmware to make it work with >> the 4504 Telescope? Yes, the 497 will operate the 4504... if the 497's firmware is at least v27E or newer, it will operate the 4504 without requiring a download. To do that, select any of the LXD55 or LXD75 models, and then change the Setup/Telescope/RA Ratio (and DEC Ratio) to 4.562963 (that's a keypad operation). After that, it'll work. >> I assume I will need the 505 cable to do this. True? Optional, see above. All the patch does is replace one of the existing model choices with the text "4504/114EQ" and set the ratios as shown above (in -earlier- versions of the firmware, Meade did not provide some of the GEM programming). >> I have seen some "Starfinder" hand paddles listed on Ebay - would any of >> those work or do I need something more specific? If they're truly Starfinder hand paddles, they should work. (the "Starfinder" programming -only- operates the 4504 style of mount) You can -try- using your 494 by selecting the ETX70 model, then selecting Setup/Telescope Mount/Polar[enter] and then setting the Ratios as above. That will allow many GoTo operations, but will suffer from not trying to avoid the tripod when swinging the mirror, and it will not attempt to perform the "meridian flip" required for swinging from a target to the east to a target to the west. have fun --dick
