Subject: Meade 4500/4504 OTA on a DS2000 mount. Sent: Monday, November 15, 2010 14:14:23 From: Martin Kemp (firstname.lastname@example.org) Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I am trying to use a 497 autostar controller on a DS 2000 mount with an older 4500/4504 OTA. It keeps hitting the mount. Any suggestions? I have the telescope model set in the 497 to ds2114 which is the closest thing available. Thanks for any info. Martin KempMike here: Have you done a CALIBRATE MOTOR and TRAIN DRIVES (both axes)? Also, "what" keeps hitting the mount?
Thanks for the quick reply! I actually did a motor calibration and trained the drives today, but I haven't been able to re-test it yet (cloudy). The length of the OTA on the 4500 is approx 860mm while the lenth of the ds2114 is quite a bit less( no exact dimension of the length is given). Basically the bottom of the 4500 OTA is banging on the tripod legs when at high elevations. I was just wondering if there was a patch for the 497 that took in account the increased length of the 4500 vs the ds2114 OTA. Thanks again for the quick reply! Martin KempMike here: You can set the Max Elevation to avoid slewing too high. It's in the Setup: Telescope menu.
Thanks, I will try that. I think the ds2114 has a built in barlow lens which lets it have the same focal length, with a shorter tube, than the 4500. Thanks again, Martin KempMike here: Not a "Barlow Lens" but a corrector plate at the front aperture. The optical design does in fact yield a longer focal length in a shorter tube by the use of a lens and the mirrors.
Subject: DS 2080 lnt w/ autostar 494 Sent: Friday, November 5, 2010 12:12:23 From: bobmacny333 (email@example.com) I've been looking at your really great site. The question I cant seem to answer is this. How do I get 494 auto star to work with LNT module. It works with my 497. On the 497 I can hold the mode button until RA appears then scroll down until LNT set appears. This doesn't work with either of my 494's. The RA display does appear but scroll down find finder set. The Meade ads and literature show scope with autostar 494,, confused please help.Mike here: Did your DS LNT model come with this AutoStar #494 or have you replaced it with another #494, perhaps older #494?
It could be an older unit, Un or fortunately I had an Etx 60 with 494. I sold base and arms.then mounted the ETX ota on my older 2120 10" Sct. as a finder. I don't know how to tell which autostar is which. My daughter doesn't have the skill or patience to play much with the ETX 60. Alignment frustrates her. Tying a different direction I thought the LNT would be better for her. Is there a way to know what 494 to use with DS 2080 LNT Thanks for your help, and a great site Clear skiesMike here: The older #494 will not likely have the software to recognize the LNT. And the #494 is not user updateable. As to which version of the #494 began supporting the LNT module, the copyright date shown on the AutoStar on startup would probably have to be around 2005 or so. However, the LNT may not help with alignment frustrations. The LNT only takes care of leveling and finding True North. So, if setting up in the proper Home position is not the source of the frustration, the LNT won't help. Once past that step, all that is required it to properly identify the alignment stars. If that's the source of the frustration, then perhaps the articles "Alignment/High Precision/Star Charts" and "Another AutoStar Alignment Stars Chart" on the Helpful Information: AutoStar Info page will help.
Thanks sooo much
