Cassiopeia Observatory 2024 Year End Report

Posted: 31 December 2024

2024 was an exciting year at Cassiopeia Observatory and beyond.

Highlights for 2024:

Total Solar Eclipse on 8 April that I and family observed from my southern Indiana hometown. I was the keynote speaker at my hometown's Eclipse Festival.

Amazing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) that was visible from Oracle in southern Arizona in May and again in October.

Moderately bright Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3).

Twelve California rocket launches observed from Arizona.

Completed the Barnard Objects Project that I had begun in September 2023.

As I have said before, I worked on the Indiana University Astronomy Department Asteroid Program as an undergraduate student in Astrophysics 1966-70. During that experience I developed a love for asteroids. But with all my Barnard Objects Project imaging, frequent poor observing conditions, and traveling, I only photographed two asteroids in 2024. You can see the images on the Asteroids & Dwarf Planets Astrophotography Album.

Dark Sky Public Outreach

In March, Pinal County government in Arizona released a short video about International Dark Sky Week 2024 that I appear in. In October, I was a speaker at the Summit for Arizona Trails held in Cottonwood, Arizona, an International Dark Sky Community. In November, I appeared on the Arizona PBS show "Night Hikes in Arizona: Protecting our Skies".

So ends my 28th year of documenting my astronomical activities online and my 15th year at Cassiopeia Observatory.

My autobiography Finding my Way to the Stars is still available in paperback and an ebook.
