Subject: starter telescope Sent: Saturday, May 21, 2005 16:42:33 From: Maciej Szaabski (mszalabski@supermedia.pl) Please help me with choice. I've found 2114ATS on the promotional sale in relately good price. Please, advise me if the 2114ATS is good model as starter telescope for kid? Isn't it pure toy telescope? Will have I some fan also, or it isn't rather serious equipment? What are its limitations in comparison to eg. ETX 90 or 105? Do the astrofotography is possible using this equipment? Do the computer control is worth of extra expense, or is it definitely better to spend the money on better optics? I intend to use it to observation from my garden mainly (suburban), with rather brighter sky. Also I have empty meadows close to my location. My son wants me to show him Pluto, but as I know it isn't possible with this telescope. If this model will be not appropriate, what else should I consider? Best regards -- MaciejMike here: No, it isn't a toy. It is a good telescope which can provide years of enjoyment. However, there is a common ailment that strikes many amateur astronomers: "aperture fever". A larger, more capable telescope is often a desire that strkes! But yes, you can do some forms of astrophotography with any telescope, including the DS models. Computer control can be done if you want but it isn't necessary. And as I always say, the best telescope for a new buyer is the one that gets used instead of staying in the closet. As long as it meets your expectations (or you can live with it if it doesn't) and is not so cumbersome to set up that you don't use it (and the DS isn't).
And:
Thank you for your answer :) Best regards Maciej
Subject: yard sale purchase TELESTAR 114 AZ Sent: Saturday, May 21, 2005 12:35:14 From: jim esparza (VIETNAMMARINE@peoplepc.com) I just purchased a telestar 114 az at a yard sale and couldn't resist. I don't know anything about this model. How can I get information explaining how it works. Would greatly appreciate it. Everything looks in tack however when I look thru the lens I see nothing what am I doing wrong ? JimMike here: It sounds like a Meade telescope and if so, contact them for a manual. As to not being able to see anything through it, did it include any eyepieces?
