Subject: Meade DS-114 Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 14:03:03 From: Marc Daigneault (normarcd@hotmail.com) I just got this Meade DS-114 telescope as a gift. The eye piece is on the side. Everything I look at is upside down. I called Meade and they told me that this is a Newtonian Scope and that it is normal. I don't know a thing about telescopes, but it sounds to me like they are blowing smoke up my you know what. Is Meade correct? Why would anyone want to look at things upside down???? Thanks MarcMike here: You have an astronomical telescope, not a terrestrial telescope. So, direction of the image is less important. And yes, the image is inverted when viewing through the eyepiece. You can correct this by standing with your back to the object you are looking at. There are also accessories that will correct the image for viewing land objects.
Subject: difference between a ds-127EC and the DS-2130AT Sent: Sunday, September 24, 2006 07:10:24 From: The Sutton Family (suttons@imin.org) I am trying to decide between an older ds-127EC and the newer ds-2130AT. Both are electronically driven GOTO 5" reflectors. My question is this - are there any known quality issues on the ds-2130AT? Meade is blowing them out the door with the autostar controller, free shipping, and a 1 yr warranty for 165.00. A guy on Astromart has a DS-127EC that is 7 yrs old for about the same price. I know that sometimes older is better and the ds-127EC appears to be out together a little better. The owner has had it for seven yrs and never had a problem with it. Which if these would you buy? Is it a no brainer - by the new one w/warranty - or did they build, them better 7 yrs ago? Was meade making their own mirrors back then as opposed to the chinese/taiwanese ones they are using today? Thanks in advance for any advice - Sincerely, PatrickMike here: If memory serves, the mounts are different. And the EC model didn't come with an AutoStar (although one can be added). But consider that if you buy from Meade you get the warranty.
Subject: DS-2114 ATSA down motor failure Sent: Saturday, September 23, 2006 18:20:27 From: JKCY2K@aol.com (JKCY2K@aol.com) Let me start by saying that I enjoy your web site, but have not been able to find the answer to my question/problem. Last Christmas I received the one thing I really wanted, a Meade DS-2114 ATSA from Walmart. It's always had the problem of the down motor sometimes not engaging. Recently this has gotten worse. It usually works fine before and after alignment, but does not want to work when aligning. I can hear the motor engage, and I know it's not the batteries, that's the first thing I tried. I called Meade about it once but got the runaround. Any advice on how to fix it myself? Thank you for your time.Mike here: Not having a DS model I can't explicitly answer but have you done a CALIBRATE MOTOR and TRAIN DRIVES? Those are required with the Autostar ETX models.
And:
Yes, I tried both, still no difference. It'll usually work before and after alignment, but almost never the first time when you really need it during alignment. What I still consider strange is that I can hear the motor engage, but it takes about 2-3 seconds for the telescope to catch. Any other advice?Mike here: You may be able to adjust the settings (although not having a DS model I don't know for certain). See the articles on "percentages" on the Helpful Information: AutoStar Info page.
Subject: Meade suport stinks Help? Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2006 21:32:55 From: Al schroepfer (aschroepfer@wi.rr.com) Hello my name is Al I have a telescope. It is a Meade DS-2130AT witch I never got the 494 autostar to aline right? Well I picked up the lunar planetary imager so I could at least track and take pics. Well that was after meade said it would work with all there scopes and it did come with the # 506 cable? Well the cable did not work and the 494 handpaddle said I needed the etx software? So I picked up A new #506 cable and astrofinder software only to find that it did not suport the lunar planetary imager? Then I tryed the autostar suite and it does not work with the #506 cable ? Meade suport does not reply to the 4 help desk tickets no reply? Can anyone HELP ME get this to work? Thanks ALMike here: The AutoStar Suite software requires the #497 AutoStar. The cable that came with LPI is the #505 serial cable which won't work with the #494 AutoStar.
