An Awesome Total Solar Eclipse Experience April 2024

Posted: 13 April 2024

On Saturday, 6 April, I was "on display" at the Seymour Museum. It makes you feel old to be "on display" in a historical museum!

I was happy to meet Margaret Wilson in person at the Museum.

It was a thrill for me to get to see Bob Kamman at the Museum. Back in the 1960s he owned Seymour Pharmacy. I would take my astrophotography roll film to him for processing! He is on the Seymour Museum Board of Directors. It was fun having my wife Laurraine meet him.

The Museum also honored Dr. Frank K. Edmondson, a famous astronomer from Seymour. Dr. Edmondson was the Chairman of the Indiana University Department of Astronomy 1944-78, including when I was an Astrophysics undergraduate student 1966-1970. He began his research career as an IU graduate student in 1934 working at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, as an observing assistant to Clyde Tombaugh, the discoverer of Pluto. He established the IU Asteroid Program in 1949; I worked on the Asteroid Program part-time all four years as an undergraduate student and full-time for two months following graduation. He was the National Science Foundation Astronomy Programs Director 1956-57, an advisor on the development and site selection of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (now known as NOIRLab), including Kitt Peak National Observatory west of Tucson, Arizona, and was instrumental in creating the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). This photo shows the display of two famous Seymour astronomers, Dr. Edmondson on the left, and myself on the right.

I sold and autographed several copies of my autobiography Finding my Way to the Stars.

It was nice to see some of my relatives, classmates, and friends at the Museum. Here are nieces Teresa, Linda, and Kathy.
